Using vegetable oil, water and dish soap, we took a look at three major zones in the ocean. You can discuss density and viscosity before deciding which of the above will sink to the bottom. Then before pouring them gently into a small glass, tint them with food colouring, adding darker shades to the deeper zones.
Then we created kite paper zones by ripping a section of cardstock to represent the ocean floor. Overlap kite or tissue paper so the levels become decreasingly darker. Add animal silhouettes in the proper zones and label: Sunlight Zone, Twilight Zone, Midnight Zone, Abyss, Trench.
