20 Days of Play: Hand-carved, Coal-hollowed Dish
"Mom, what do you want for Christmas,
besides hugs & kisses, love, peace on earth, all that stuff."
~Miss O, 15
Fawning over pinterest, as I am known to do from time-to-time (okay, daily and sometimes more than that!) I found a carving of a wooden dish. My oldest daughter is a big fan of woodworking, She's pretty much self-taught. And if I do say so myself, she's getting pretty darn good! So I did the unthinkable, I requested more than peace on earth this Christmas-I asked for that wooden dish.
She delivered. And then some. The center of the hardwood she hollowed out with hot coals, that lovely Japanese technique, Yakisugi, that leaves the surface with a charred black effect. We did this once for our Aboriginal People unit, when making tiny canoes.
Then she sanded it all up and polished it with beeswax and jojoba, not only making it waterproof but food-friendly.
She totally outdid herself, said her appreciative mother;)
