Snow & Ice: Ice Core Science
Though this science takes a couple of days prep time, it's worth the results. You can request the help of the kids to prepare the ice core, or keep it a surprise.
Using a tall tetra pak, build your ice core. One deep layer represents the winter, while a thin layer represents the summer. Those two seasons make up an Arctic year. Make sure to dye the water two colours (or a clear and a colour) for better distinction in the observation process. We coloured the Winter Ice purple and the Summer Ice, clear. Collect ash from a fireplace or pit. Use this on one or several layers to represent volcanic activity in that season and year. Freeze one layer at a time, Winter and Summer Ice, so they are solid and do not mix. Once your Ice Core sample is complete, bury it in the snow for excavation/scavenger hunt.
