Summertime Study: Language Games

 

Hunt & Match

Hide animals or objects. Write their names in chalk in main space. Once collected, match the animal/object to their name.

Run & Find

Scatter chalk-written letters in a large circle. Have children run around the circle. When you call out the sound for a letter, they have to jump on.

Ball Blends

Create a chalk parking lot for blends (-bl, -br, -ch, -sh) with one blend written in each parking space. Using a soccer ball or street hockey ball/stick, call out a blend and have the child aim for the correct parking space.

Lego De-coding

This one is great for reluctant readers. I set out a Lego Code Board (Lego pieces that represent letters of the alphabet) and a separate Secret Message board. Have your learner translate on paper and then write a message in Lego back to you.

Siblings can exchange as well.

Lego Letters

I love this one for the littles. It helps build fine motor skills and letter recognition. You can also teach them how one letter can morph into another with a few simple changes (E-F, I-L etc.)
