Five-in-a-Row: Pumpkins & Squash (Sophie's Squash)

Meet Bernice, Bonnie and Baxter from 'Sophie's Squash'! Our resident five year old got a real kick out of having a face added to our butternut squash this week, in honour of our Five-in-a-Row book.

Our first activity was a Pumpkin Geoboard. Super simple. Choose a gourd of any size and shape, chart a grid (ours was 9x9) and then drill in screws or hammer in nails on the points of the grid. I've even seen golf tees used for the very wee.

Then provide a good handful of elastic bands and call out shapes, letters or numbers. Have the child use the elastic bands to create the shapes.

Our playdough assignment involved, reading a recipe as well as sensory play. We made one batch of playdough with three different natural colours and scents: coffee, turmeric/ginger and cinnamon. Then we re-created Bernice's babies, Bonnie & Baxter!

The incredible Art Hub had a pumpkin tutorial, so Mr. Cool and his brother followed along with the art lesson.

We also requested one of the big sisters write a LEGO message for de-coding and answering...in LEGO.

Our ten year old, loves jokes, so we used invisible pens to write out jokes and punchlines in a scramble game.
